About Shanyn ...
Shanyn Fiske is a fashion / editorial / portrait photographer based in Philadelphia. Born in Beijing and educated in the US and UK, Shanyn produces narrative-rich and idea-driven images that derive from both her passion for photography and her lifelong study of literature and the arts.
Shanyn received her BA in Comparative Literature and Classics from Brown University and her Ph.D. in English Literature from the University of Pennsylvania. She studied Classics and Victorian literature at Oxford University and Cambridge University, where she developed her love of Pre-Raphaelite art and 19th-century photography. Her photography is informed by both of these movements as well as by the work of contemporary artists like Peter Lindbergh, Helmut Newton, and Sally Mann. In addition to her photography practice, she is a professor of English at Rutgers University and the director of the graduate program in Literature and Media Studies.
Shanyn believes deeply in the power of photography (both still and moving) to create meaningful change. She is an advocate for social justice and diversity in the arts.
